This set is from an ?85 GLA, Carb ID 63B, indicating it is probably a Canadian issue with a lot more power to offer. Slow Jet is #35, Main jet is #108, indicating that it wasn?t stifled by California smog restrictions. Probably the best carburetor rack of the 1200 series.
This set was on the shelves since the bike was parted and engine sold in 2004, sort of lost behind 18 other Goldwing Carb racks that I stuffed away for future review. In that 2025 is the Carb-year for StraightWings, and I?ve done the GL1000 carburetors and the GL1100 carburetors: I finally got to the back of the shelves. This rack went on the bench last night. Proper cleaning to rid it of the rodent stench and get the dust off, then when this was ?opened? I nearly fell over. Man, this rack is just plain outstanding. A few pics were taken of the underside of the plenum and the interior before anything else was done. Incredibly nice set on the interior: clean as a whistle.
The only jets in this complete rack that needed a bit of cleaning were the needles, which had minor varnish.Regardless, all jets were removed, soaked in Honda carburetor cleaner overnight. The air cut-off was dis-assembled to find that it is as supple and clean as if this were running yesterday.
The vacuum diaphragms were removed, checked, cleaned: also nice and supple, no damage at all.
All air and fuel passages cleaned, high-pressure aired, done again twice more.
Float fuel jets removed, cleaned. Fuel valves checked as excellent.
Re-assembled, floats meticulously set at 7.5mm. All throttle linkage lubricated and checked. Fuel enrichment valves cleaned, checked, lubricated, as well as the choke linkage. CV caps polished to check for damage: all good. Plenum cover cleaned, gasket cleaned, replaced. The barn-rodents had a fine time around the edge of the air-filter base opening, but no harm done to prevent proper mechanical operation. A couple of lightly tarnished plenum-top screws required cleaning, so I did them all.
This set will require adjustment to your bike, as they all do. The pilot jets were cleaned, new o-rings applied, they are set to 2 turns out. They will need to be adjusted to within 40 mm (1.6 in) HG of each other, but 10mm is better if you are into fiddling longer to set them up.
in general: you will go a long way, a long time, and perhaps not again find a set as nice as these. I would have to say that it is the nicest operational set of GL1200 carbs that I have seen for many, many years. Load them, and ride safe.
